What Can Xmm-newton Tell Us about the Spin Periods of Intermediate Polars?
نویسندگان
چکیده
XMM-Newton's unprecedented combination of spectral resolution and high throughput allows us to perform the best phase-resolved X-ray analysis of intermediate polars to date. The Optical Monitor gives optical/UV photom-etry simultaneously with the X-ray data. We present a comprehensive study of X-ray spin pulses in IPs, giving spin-pulses and hardness ratios for every IP looked at with XMM-Newton to date.

Why does the intermediate polar V 405 Aurigae show a double - peaked spin pulse ?
V405 Aurigae is an intermediate polar showing a double-peaked pulsation in soft X-rays and a single-peaked pulsation in harder X-rays. From XMM-Newton observations we find that the soft band is dominated by blackbody emission from the heated white-dwarf surface. Such emission is at a maximum when either magnetic pole points towards us, explaining the double-peaked pulsation. The symmetry of the...
متن کاملThe XMM-Newton-MSSL survey of Polars
The XMM-Newton-MSSL survey of polars is a snapshot survey of nearly 40 polars. We present the initial results, with an emphasis on the energy balance in these systems and the number of systems which were observed in a low accretion state. In contrast to the ROSAT results we find that the vast majority of polars show no ‘soft X-ray excess’. We find that half of our sample were observed in low or...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of polars in low accretion states
We have made a series of snap-shot observations of 37 polars using XMM-Newton. We found that 16 of these systems were in a low, or much reduced, accretion state. Of those, 6 were not detected in X-rays. This suggests that in any survey of polars, around half will be in a low accretion state. We tested if there was a bias towards certain orbital periods: this is not the case. Of the 10 systems w...
متن کاملWHY DO SOME INTERMEDIATE POLARS SHOW SOFT X-RAY EMISSION? A SURVEY OF XMM-Newton SPECTRA
We make a systematic analysis of the XMM-Newton X-ray spectra of intermediate polars (IPs) and find that, contrary to the traditional picture, most show a soft blackbody component. We compare the results with those from AM Her stars and deduce that the blackbody emission arises from reprocessing of hard X-rays, rather than from the blobby accretion sometimes seen in AM Hers. Whether an IP shows...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of the complex spin pulse of the intermediate polar PQ Geminorum
The intermediate polar PQ Geminorum shows a complex pulsation, caused by a spinning white dwarf, which varies markedly with wavelength. We report XMM-Newton observations, including the soft and hard X-ray bands and the first UV lightcurves of this star. We update the ephemeris for PQ Gem allowing us to align these data with a compilation of lightcurves from the optical to the X-ray. Building on...
